There’s something special about giving back with handmade items. That's why our Crafting for a Cause event invites you to donate your handmade creations to local charities, shelters, hospitals, or any other organization or cause you feel close to. It doesn’t take a giant project to do good, sometimes a few stitches are all it takes. Check out the organizations and ideas below for inspiration and to get you started!

How to take part

  1. Choose an organization - We've listed more organizations that accept handmade donations below. You can also look for a local charity, hospital, shelter, or community group that accepts handmade donations. 
  2. Craft your item, take a photo, donate it - Knit, crochet, or create your heart out! Don't forget to snap a picture before mailing it to an organization or dropping it off locally.
  3. Share a photo in the Forum - to enter the giveaway and to encourage others! Post the photo of your handmade donation and a short note in the Crafting for a Cause topic in the App Forum.

We’ve gathered some inspiring charities that accept handmade donations below, but feel free to find your own local initiative. You can also check with local community centers, churches, animal shelters, hospitals or other organizations that might love handmade donations like worry worms, blankets or hats.

The organizations listed below are meant to inspire you and show just a few of the ways your handmade creations can make a difference. Please check each organization’s guidelines thoroughly before starting your project. My Row Counter is not affiliated with any of the listed organizations, but we hope this list sparks ideas and encourages you to take part!

Project Linus provides handmade blankets to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or in need of comfort. With hundreds of local chapters, they’re always buzzing with activity and frequently host blanket-making events for volunteers. Since each chapter may have its own guidelines and drop-off procedures, be sure to check with your local chapter first before you start crafting, they’ll let you know exactly what’s needed.

What you can craft: knitted, crocheted or quilted blankets made with child-friendly washable yarn in appropriate colours and sizes. Check patterns and local demand in directories.

Knots of Love brings comfort and warmth to people in need through handcrafted knitted and crocheted beanies for chemotherapy patients and baby blankets for NICUs across the U.S. They provide detailed guidelines to ensure every item is soft, safe, and ready to wear or snuggle.
What you can craft: soft, comfortable caps/beanies; small blankets for infants.

Wrap with Love produces and distributes knitted wraps (used as blankets) for people who have been exposed to the cold in Australia and around the world. They also host knitting groups and events locally.
What you can craft: Knit or crochet a square or an entire wrap.

Knitted Knockers connects volunteer knitters and crocheters with breast cancer survivors to offer special handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomy or lumpectomy. 
What you can craft: Knitted or crocheted Knockers, check with a local collection point.

Binky Patrol distributes homemade blankets to children born drug-addicted, infected with AIDS or who are battling other chronic & terminal illnesses, homeless, victims of violent crimes, those who are abused, in foster care, or experiencing trauma of any kind. You can donate a Binky at a local chapter near you.  They host frequent events and you can also contribute by registering as a drop-off point or starting a local chapter.
What you can craft: New homemade blankets that can be sewn, knitted, crocheted, fleece tied, or quilted.

Knit for Peace is a UK-based charity that coordinates the collection and distribution of handmade items to those in need. They also run a variety of campaigns to encourage knitting: providing marginalised people with knitting supplies and facilitating schools teaching children how to knit. Donations are made locally to participating organisations or directly to Knit for Peace.
What you can craft: a wide range of knitted and crocheted items, including hats, scarves, baby clothes, and blankets.

Für Sternenzauber & Frühchenwunder nähen, stricken und häkeln tausende ehrenamtliche Helfer liebevoll passende Kleidung und basteln Andenken für Kinder, die viel zu früh die Reise ins Leben antreten und manchmal leider nur sehr kurz in der Mitte ihrer Lieben verweilen dürfen. Der Verein organisiert sich in einer Facebookgruppe und verteilt Spenden an rund 400 Krankenhäuser, Hebammen, Hospize, Frauenärzte und Bestatter in Deutschland, Luxemburg, Österreich und der Schweiz.
